ALL in One SEO Plugin - Best Settings (2021 Version 4.0.11)

For the most part, configuring AIOSEO (Version 4.0.11) is pretty simple. You pretty much need to focus on only two sections in the free version which is 'Search Appearance' and 'Social Media' as shown in the image below. All other sections can be left as it is.

For the paid version, you will need to also configure 'Local SEO' and 'Schema' provided that you offer services that are specific to your locality.

1. Search Appearance

In the 'Search Appearance' section you have six categories namely Global Settings, Content Types, taxonomies, Media, Archives and Advanced as shown in the image below: .

Here's how to configure them:

a. Global Settings

Under 'Global Settings', you can set the title tag and meta description tag for your site's homepage. A nifty trick is to delete all the tags by clicking 'backspace' on your keyboard and then simply writing out your title and meta description tag as shown in the image below:

From here, you can scroll down and fill out the Knowledge Graph with your personal or company details (Name, Address etc.).

b. Content Types

This page shows all your content types that you theme has. For the most part it would be 'Posts' and 'Pages'.

For the most part you can leave everything as it is on here if you are on the free version.

If you are on the paid version, you can configure global schema settings.

Tip: If you are on the free version and want schema, there are tons of free Schema plugins available that you can use.

c. Taxonomies

Next in we have Taxonomies which is mostly - Categories and Tags.

To keep things clean, it is best to add a 'NoIndex' to both Category and Tag pages. When you do this Google will not show these pages in their search results but will still crawl the links on these pages and pass link value.

You can do this by selecting 'No' in the 'Show in Search results' section.

You can do the same for Tags.

d. Media

For Media it is best to add a 'NoIndex' tag to media pages but since this option is not available, you can redirect the attachment pages to the attachment. This is the default setting so you can leave it as it is.

e. Archives

It is best to 'NoIndex' all archive pages. You can do this by selecting 'NO' in 'Show in Search Results' section for all options.

f. Advanced

Finally we are in the Advanced section. Here again, everything can be left as it is.

So that takes care of the 'Search Appearance' settings.

2. Social Media

Next thing you need to configure is Social Media. Let's see how.

a. Social Profiles

You can add URLs of your social profiles here. Just add profiles for your active networks and leave the others blank.

b. Facebook

This settings helps you create Facebook OG tags in the header of your page (you can view this by checking your page's HTML source by clicking CTRL+U).

If you use featured images for your posts (which should be the case) then you can select 'Featured Image' as the 'Default Post Image Source' as shown in the image below.

If you don't use 'Featured Images' you can select, 'First Image in Content' instead.

For Default Post Type Objects, you can select the 'Post Type' based on the type of site you run. Considering that your site is an ecommerce site with a blog, you can select 'Article' for 'Posts' and 'Products' for 'Pages' as shown in the image below:

For homepage settings, you can use your site's homepage Title and description (that we set in Global Settings) and upload your site's default image. This can help when someone shares your homepage in Facebook.

The Object type needs to be set based on the type of site your run. For instance, if you run an informational site, just select 'Article' or 'Website'.

Finally, if you want to track your Facebook shares and such, click on the 'Advanced' settings and add your Facebook App and Admin ID.

c. Twitter

For Twitter all you need to do is select 'Featured Image' and 'Summery with Large Image'

d. Pinterest

For Pinterest, you can leave the settings as they are. If you want you can add the Pinterest verification code to get Pinterest traffic insights.

3. Sitemap

Sitemap can be left to default settings.

Individual Post/Page Settings

In addition to all these global settings, AIOSEO also you to fine tune your settings for individual posts/pages. For instance, you can add a custom Title Tag and Meta Description tag if you want. You can also set Robots tags for individual pages/pages and even change Facebook OG tag settings.

Simply scroll down to the bottom of your post/page to find these custom settings.

Summing it up

So that's about it. This is all you need to do to configure All in One SEO. If you have any queries or want custom help, feel free to contact me.

Thanks for the nice post !! - it was really helpful

Could you please expand on "The plugin automatically adds the rel="next" and rel="prev" meta tags to all paginated posts and archive pages which is great" - is this the free version or the paid version? Because no mention of rel="prev" & rel="next" in the documentation of the free version.

    • M Mukesh says:

Hi Andrea, I am not sure if this is in the documentation or not, but the plugin does add the rel and prev tags to paginated pages. You can check the HTML source of your pages after installing the plugin to see these tags being added.
